Experience
I have experience tutoring ESL, German as a foreign language, and college-level or college-prep essay and analytical writing. I also have experience tutoring academic writing, including citation rules and style. Having worked as a copy-editor and manuscript editor in the past, I'm a fan of proper punctuation,, syntax, and diction - in fact, I love them! And I've developed ways to get my students enthusiastic about them too. I enjoy overcoming challenges with my students and enabling them to learn and progress without difficulty. I tailor all my materials to my students particular needs, strengths and weaknesses, as well as preferences, where age appropriate. I have training as an ESL instructor from Berlitz Germany and currently work as a German instructor for German 3 at a Portland Saturday school. I have also assisted many students with their college application essays, learning to write for the SAT and the GRE, and to apply for scholarships and employment through strategic cover letters and other application materials. As a final note: Language is a living artifact, a process - tutors should be immersed in the subjects they teach! I have written journalistically for various online magazines and academic journals, and continue to work on a freelance basis as a copy-editor and writing coach for native and non-native English speakers.

I love to play basketball, commute by bike, and go on trail runs. When I'm not enjoying the outdoors, I'm reading the newspaper, watching a film, or trying to learn a new language. I enjoy doing crafts with friends and exploring the city with a hot drink and a camera. In the end, I'm a happy, curious cat!
